The course & its setting
Founded in 1967, the club was first set up as a 9-hole course, designed by the Icelandic champion Magnús Guðmundsson. Development continued over the years, until the extension to 18 holes, carried out by the Icelandic architect Hannes Þorsteinsson, giving birth to the current course called Hvaleyrarvöllur.
The course is distinguished by a particularly original configuration. The first nine holes cross a vast lava field, where the volcanic terrain creates narrow fairways and demands precision and strategy. The final nine holes, on the other hand, are played on a small, formerly agricultural peninsula, offering unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean, the port of Hafnarfjörður and, on a clear day, the Snæfellsjökull glacier.

A unique environment
Par 71 and measuring up to 6,000 metersdepending on departures, the course is considered one of the most famous courses in Iceland. Its links style and its volcanic environment offer a unique gaming experience, where skill and precision take precedence over power, particularly in the part located in the heart of the lava fields.
The club also hosts international competitions, notably the Iceland Open, played at the time of the summer solstice. This tournament allows players to take advantage of the midnight sun, a feature that allows golf to be played late at night under exceptional natural light.
